2.3 Student Participation

Student participation

Typical ways of assessing student participation can have the effect of rewarding specific forms of learning and engagement over others.

To avoid disadvantaging certain students, it is important to consider how class participation can be impacted by systemic inequities and experiences of marginalization.

You can create a more inclusive classroom by offering students multiple ways to participate, offering more opportunities for students to demonstrate engagement with their peers and course materials, as well as to showcase their grasp of course concepts.

What is your preferred way of participating in large groups (meetings, workshops, etc.)?

How might this preference shape the way you assess student participation in your course?
