Canvas: How to set Grade Policy to Hide Grades
How to set Grade Posting Policy to Hide Grades
By default, Canvas has an automatic grade posting policy. When this setting is selected, grades and comments will be posted (and thus visible to students) as soon as they’re entered. This also means that students will see their quiz marks as soon as they submit a quiz. This is the default policy for every Canvas course.

- Hide Grades for an Existing Assignment
- Manually Post Grades
Set a Course-wide Manual Grade Posting Policy
The course-wide setting will only effect quizzes and assignments created AFTER setting the policy. Existing quizzes and assignments must each be changed individually. When you set a manual grade posting policy at the course level, grades that you enter in the Gradebook will be hidden from students until you choose to post them. If you set this policy, you will need to post grades manually for each assignment when you’re ready for students to see their grades. This allows you to grade assignments/quizzes at your own pace and release all students' grades at the same time.
Note: If you enter grades for an assignment while your course is set to the default "Automatically Post Grades" policy, the grades and comments you’ve entered and posted will remain visible to students even if you later change your grade posting policy to "Manually Post Grades". To learn how to hide grades that are already visible to students, please see the section “Hide Grades for an Existing Assignment”.
- Navigate to Grades in your Canvas course and click the Settings icon
found at the top-right corner of the page.
- Click the Grade Posting Policy tab.
- Select Manually Post Grades.
- Click Update.
All grades for newly created assignments will be hidden by default.
Hide Grades for an Existing Assignment
If you created assignments prior to changing your course-wide grade posting policy, or if you only want to hide/mute the grades for a specific existing assignment, you can change the grade posting policy on individual assignments as follows.- Navigate to Grades in your Canvas course and find the specific Quiz or Assignment column you wish to hide.
- Click on the option menu (triple-dot icon next to the assignment name).
- Click Grade Posting Policy.
- Select to post grades Manually. This will hide any newly submitted assignments grades from the student, but will not hide grades for assignments that have already been submitted..
- Click Save.
- The word MANUAL will now appear in the assignment title line. This is confirmation that the assignment has a manual grade posting policy and any grades entered from this point forward will be hidden from the students (until you are ready to post them).
- Changing to a manual grade posting policy does not hide existing grades. If there were already grades in the gradebook for the assignment that you just set to MANUAL, you will need to hide the posted grades. Click on the option menu (triple-dot icon) and click Hide grades.
- Click Hide.
- A crossed out eye icon will display in the assignment title line. This indicates that any grades displayed in the gradebook are currently hidden from students.
Manually Post Grades
When you are ready to share grades with your students, you will need to manually post the grades.
- Navigate to Grades in your Canvas Canvas and find the specific Quiz or Assignment column you wish to post.
- Click on the options menu(triple-dot icon).
- Click on Post Grades. Note: if the Hide Grades option (below Post Grades) is unrestricted (not greyed out, as shown here), it means that there are submitted assignment grades that are currently visible to the respective students.
- You will now have the option to post grades for everyone, or only post grades for students who have received a grade or submission comment. Note that grades that are currently hidden will be highlighted with a red dot in the gradebook column. Click Post after you have made your selection.
