Setting Notifications - Global and for a Single Course

Canvas includes a set of default notification preferences you can receive for your courses. However, you can change the default settings by setting your own notification preferences. These preferences only apply to you; they are not used to control how course updates are sent to other users.

Setting Global Canvas Notifications

Set your default notification settings for all courses through the Account Notification Settings.

  1. In the left Global Navigation menu, click on Account.
  2. In the menu that appears, click Notifications.

  1. The Account Notification Settings page loads. These settings apply to all courses, but course level notifications will override these account level notifications. For each notification type, select the delivery frequency for each of your contact methods. As shown here, you may wish to use one email address as your primary contact method, but also have a second email address associated with your Canvas profile.
    Delivery frequency options include:
    1. Notify immediately
    2. Notifications off
    3. Daily summary
    4. Weekly summary

    Click on the notification icon to change the notification delivery frequency preference.

  1. For more details on each of the individual Course Activities, hover over each line item name.

  2. To set push notifications, enable push notifications in the Canvas Student or Teacher app in the Push Notification column. Push notifications can only be sent to your mobile device right away or not at all. There is no option for daily and weekly notifications.
