DAY 1: Overview

You are starting this workshop with different experiences and understandings of online learning. Some of you may be teaching online for the first time, many of you may have been teaching online since we 'pivoted' online in March 2019, and some of you may have years of experience teaching online.

During Day 1 we will work together to develop a shared understanding of what 'good' teaching and learning is. Through going through today's content and completing the discussion activity we hope to develop a shared foundation of what 'good online' through readings and sharing what has been working for you.

In this module, we will also explore what has been emerging in this online pivot and how this can start informing our approach to online teaching.

Learning Objectives

By the end of Day 1, you will be able to:

  • Relate online teaching strategies and approaches to your current or upcoming online course.
  • Discuss approaches, strategies and lesson learned, based on your online teaching experience in the last two semesters
  • Identify lessons that have emerged from the shift to online learning in the last 8-months
  • Affirm the approaches and strategies you have used in your online teaching in the past two semesters

Course Development Challenges (Optional)

  • Analyze the expected workload for an online course using the UBC-O workload calculator
  • Set up a discussion board in an online course to deal with course level questions

Guiding Questions

Consider the following questions:

  • What lessons have emerged from the shift to online learning in the last 8-months?
  • What are some general guidelines for online learning?

* We think this is a really useful article so we included it. However, the use of the term rules seems really overstated, perhaps suggestions OR good practices would be a bit more realistic.

Time: 15 min

Try one of the daily course development challenges. The goal of these challenges is to give you a chance to complete short activities to scaffold the changes that you are making to your design of teaching.

  1. Course assignment hours
  2. Setting Up and Administrative Discussion Board
