Course Development Challenges (Day 1)
Choose ONE of the following course development challenges that meet your learning goals. You do not need to share the results of the completed course challenges. However, you may wish to include these in your final course presentation. These are optional activities, but we see these as really tangible and important part of your learning.
Student Course Time Estimator: Tabulating your Course Workload
The student course time estimator has been developed at UBC Okanagan and it is based on the workload estimator developed at Rice University. The tool is only an estimator and results still need to be looked at based on your disciplinary context.
- Select a course that you are currently revising. Use the course calculator to get a rough sense of the hours you may be expecting students to complete in the course you are teaching.
- Think about whether there is more or less work than you were expecting to complete? Are there assignments or activities that could be reduced while still meeting the course learning objects: As you complete this short program refers to this result to help ensure you are not adding too much activity for your students?
Developing An Administrative/Questions Discussion Board
An administrative discussion board can be useful in reducing your email load and giving students a space to share questions that they have about the course. You can use this space to answer questions so that everyone in the class will see them,
- In your upcoming course, create a discussion board and title it Admin Discussion OR Course Questions.
- Write a set of instructions describing how students can use the discussion board, how you will be checking it and responding to it.
