1. Introduction to the Blended Workshop

Land Acknowledgement

UBC’s Point Grey Campus which is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. The land it is situated on has always been a place of learning for the Musqueam people, who for millennia have passed on in their culture, history, and traditions from one generation to the next on this site. If you are not on Musqueam land, we encourage you to learn about the Indigenous territory that you are on by visiting native-land.ca Links to an external site.

In this course, you will be asked to reflect on different aspects of your identity and how it influences different connections and relationships you may experience. These relations not only involve the people in your life, but also necessarily extend to the land(s) that you are on. Unpacking our identities involves reflecting on different powers and privileges we have as much as it involves understanding how we have come to be on the land we are on and whose lands we come from. We encourage you to keep this in mind throughout the course as we unpack concepts pertaining to identity, power, privilege, intersectionality, and bias.

Workshop Description

The workshop, Identity Matters: Connecting Power, Privilege and Bias to Anti-Racism Work, has been designed for instructors who are interested in joining conversations about anti-racism and looking for an entry point to their learning journey. This session introduces fundamental concepts such as power, privilege, and positionality, and builds a strong foundation to support your learning in anti-racism and its application to teaching and learning. This workshop is meant to be an introductory session to the Anti-Racist Teaching Workshops at the University of British Columbia.

This workshop is a blend of asynchronous and synchronous components. Prior to the 2-hour synchronous workshop, participants will work asynchronously on this Canvas module (See instructions below)

For the synchronous component, participants will meet through Zoom and:

    • Engage in conversation on concepts introduced in the module;
    • Share their insights from the online module;
    • Extend their learning and connect the learning into anti-racism in teaching and learning.

Our goal for this blended workshop is to build a strong conceptual foundation for participants to further explore anti-racism in teaching and learning.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this blended workshop you will begin to build a foundation of understanding how power, privilege and racism are interconnected. Through the online module and the synchronous session, we expect you to reach the following outcomes:

    1. Articulate an expanded awareness of the concepts and theoretical frameworks surrounding identity, power, privilege, intersectionality, and bias.
    2. Reflect on how your identities and experiences intersect with other identities, power and privilege.
    3. Connect the relationship between social identities and privilege, to institutional power and systemic racism.
    4. Apply these understandings to the classroom, in consideration of your role as an educator.

Asynchronous Pre-Work Instructions

This online module is self-paced, and it is your responsibility to ensure that you complete the module before the synchronous session. We estimate the online module to take most participants approximately 2 hours to complete.

Please be sure you complete the module in entirety; this includes watching videos, completing your identity worksheet, and reading articles, and pausing to reflect on your own practice when prompted.

Required vs. optional components: This module includes embedded URL links to online articles and videos. Engaging with these embedded resources is optional but not required unless noted otherwise (e.g., "Required readings").

We encourage you to take notes, and document your reflections and questions along the way! We look forward to meeting you at the synchronous session and walking alongside you as you begin your journey into a critical teaching practice.
