Vocabulary Definitions
Now that you have almost completed this module here are the vocabulary terms and their definitions.
Activity: Check your definitions with the definitions listed here. They may be a little different and that is okay!
Vocabulary Summary
Branch: One of the multiple library locations at UBC Library, usually specializing in a subject or type of material.
Call Number: A number assigned to library resources to classify their subject and organize them in the stacks. Library of Congress call numbers consist of one or more letters, a number, a decimal letter/ number combination, and the publication date.
Interlibrary Loan: A service that allows you to order materials not available at UBC from another library.
Library of Congress Classification: A classification system used to assign call numbers to materials at most branches at UBC Library.
Reference: A section of the library that contains background reading materials that can be borrowed with special permission.
Reserves: A section of the library that contains books set aside for course readings, with varying borrowing periods.
Stacks: The majority of the library shelves, the books kept here are borrowed normally.
Subject Librarian: A librarian with in-depth knowledge of one or more of the subjects taught at UBC. Subject librarians can help with more complex research questions.
Summon: UBC Library's search engine. Searches most of the library collection. Found in the first tab labelled General on the home page.
