Course structure

This course has been divided into three modules, to allow participants to develop the skills and knowledge needed at specific times during the term.

Module 1: Before the course starts

This module provides an introduction to online teaching and learning and resources to guide you through tasks to be completed prior to the start of term.

  1. Identify strategies to manage your workload and support your wellbeing.
  2. Describe characteristics of synchronous and asynchronous learning.
  3. Incorporate accessibility guidelines and inclusive design principles to your course materials. 
  4. Update course settings, pages, discussions, and assignments in Canvas.
Module 2: During the course Success in online teaching is related to how present and engaged the instructor is in the virtual classroom. This module describes ways to communicate with students throughout the term and to provide feedback on assessments.
  1. Articulate key strategies for developing a teaching presence in both synchronous and asynchronous teaching.
  2. Implement effective teaching practices in synchronous and asynchronous modes.
  3. Grade and provide feedback on assignments in Canvas.
  4. Use rubrics to communicate expectations and reduce your marking burden for your course. 
  5. Explain the importance of academic integrity to students.
Module 3: Concluding the course This module provides information about UBC’s Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEI) survey, communicating with your students at the end of the course, submitting grades and handling deferred grades, and preparing for teaching future courses.
  1. Communicate with your students to wrap-up the course.
  2. Submit grades through the Faculty Service Centre (FSC) and handle deferred grade requests.
  3. Reflect on your course in order to prepare for teaching future courses.
