M3: Preparing for next time: Reviewing feedback and future changes
Once the term is over, we encourage you to take some time to reflect on your experience teaching the course. You can start by reviewing feedback from the Student Experience of Instruction survey and identifying changes that may be beneficial to make for the next iteration of the course.
Checklist #9: Reflecting and planning for the future
- Review and act on feedback received from your students in the SEI survey.
- If you received negative comments, step back for a moment and then review the comments later with objectivity. Also, read the positive comments at least three times (Weimer, 2022).
- Discuss the results and your ideas with a more experienced colleague. McKeachie et al. (1980) found that having a discussion with a more experienced colleague improved teaching and learning.
- Talk to a few students because they may be able to help clarify what other students mean (Weimer, 2022)
- Seek expert assistance for interpreting and implementing the results by meeting with someone from the Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT). Refer to Brinko (1991), Theall & Franklin (1991), and Brinko & Menges (1997) for more information.
- Review your course materials while everything is still fresh in your mind. If you will be teaching the course again, consider making the revisions now.
- Make notes on what went well and what you would change.
- Will there be a different instructor next time the course is offered? If possible, it is recommended to meet with that individual now to share your experiences. At a minimum, consider making your notes available for the next instructor.
