8.1 Overview
ISW Mini-Lessons
In modules 1-7, you learned about lesson basics learning objectives, assessment, active/participatory learning and motivation - the "how" of lesson planning. At the end of each module, you applied your learning to your first ISW mini-lesson as you completed the lesson design worksheet.
Module 8 introduces the final step in designing your well-aligned mini-lesson which is to consider what your learners and you will do when in the mini-lesson- the "what" of lesson planning. Depending on the nature of your topic and learning objectives, you can incorporate the lesson basics in various ways.
As a guideline for your first ISW mini-lesson, we suggest two simplified models that you can use to structure your lesson. We recommend you use either of these models for your first mini-lesson and encourage you to experiment new strucutres in your 2nd and 3rd mini-lessons, for example by adapting the model to your specific lesson.
You will also be introduced to the ISW mini-lesson cycles and you will work through a model of giving and receiving good feedback. You can refer to this module at any point during your asynchronous learning.
Module Objectives
By the end of this module, you will be able to
- Plan a ten-minute mini-lesson on a topic of your choice, to be delivered on the first day if mini-lessons of your ISW, following either the BOPPPS or CARD model outlined in this module.
- Apply the RISE model of feedback to self-reflection and peer-to-peer feedback in the ISW during the mini-lesson cycle and after watching your video.
- Appreciate and use good feedback practices while giving feedback.
