Although Vancouver is not known to have the craziest weather, there are still weather hazards that you should be familiar with if you want to bike here in Vancouver.
1. Rain
This is probably the most common hazard you will face here in Vancouver. It is generally safe to bike in the rain but there are some hazards you need to know.
- Heavy rain reduces your overall field of view. Make sure to have your bike lights on!
- The wet roads increase the chances of slipping. The wet conditions mean you should adjust your braking habits, it takes twice as long to come to a complete stop in the rain as it does in dry conditions.
Remember to wear reflective clothing and be cautious of your surroundings in the rain.

2. Icy Conditions
Similarly to when it is raining, ice increases the chances of slipping. It is advised that you should probably not bike in these conditions. If you have no other choice, make sure to travel slower than usual and to take extra care while braking and turning.
3. Sunny Conditions
The bright rays of the sun can potentially be a hazard if you're not well equipped. Be sure to wear protective eyewear and headwear to protect yourself.
4. Wind
Be wary of strong winds as they can make biking very difficult and not fun. Also, a strong wind can potentially be a hazard as you can be knocked over quite easily.
Just use your best judgment when it comes to deciding whether or not to bike in unfavorable weather.
