BEFORE YOU GO

Arrange date(s) and time(s) - This one's a given, but choose a date with ski-appropriate weather.

Good weather conditions could include:

  • Comfortable temperatures - This could differ depending on what you pack and how many layers you're wearing at a given moment, but try to pick a date with temperatures within -8°C to 3°C.
  • Snow - You want low to medium-density snow, that's fluffier and light to glide through to have an enjoyable time. This usually occurs with freshly fallen snow.

Check Road Conditions - Sites such as Drive BC can provide you with road conditions and alternative routes you can take to get to your mountain. Also, make sure to have snow tires for extra safety.

Avalanche Warnings - Check pages such as Avalanche Canada or Adventure Smart for any avalanche warnings and other reports that could affect your safety.

Safety Equipment - In addition to the clothing you're wearing to ski, remember to pack equipment such as your ski goggles, a compass, a flashlight, etc.

WHILE YOU'RE THERE

Instructions - If you're a first-time skier, you should consult an Instructor on the mountains before you begin skiing. They will be sure to give you the fundamentals you need to comfortably ski and stay safe throughout your trip. From there, you will want to establish a clear route with you and your fellow skiers.

Safety Warnings - While on the slopes, keep an eye out for signs and boundaries to stay in safe zones, and keep your safety equipment in an accessible spot!

Layer Up/Down - Depending on the weather, you will either want to layer up or layer down while you're in the mountains. Start off with wearing base layers, and add sweaters, jackets, and accessories as it gets colder. You can also take care of yourself in unusual temperatures by staying hydrated and applying SPF (if it's sunny).

WHEN YOU'RE BACK

Recover - Give your body a break and refuel with healthy foods and water!
