Here is a checklist I have compiled that you can refer to while preparing for your trip! Hopefully it will make it more enjoyable~ ☺

Check for strong winds:

• Hot air balloons fly best in light and stable winds between 4 to 6 mph. 7 to 10 mph are maximum wind speeds for safe flights. If the wind speed is above 12 mph, the flight needs to be canceled.

Check the weather forecast:

• Visibility needs to be at least 1 to 3 miles to fly.
  • obscurations include heavy rain, fog, mist, or low clouds 
• Avoid precipitation: balloons can not fly in rain since visibility is affected and air in the heat source is cooled.
• Launch site of the hot air balloon can not be within 100 miles of a thunderstorm.
• Fronts need to be avoided since they indicate change in wind direction and stronger winds.
• Under cold temperatures, fuel tanks can not generate enough vapor pressure for the burners, so inert gases (ex. nitrogen), or electric heat tapes are needed as alternatives.

Dress appropriately:

• Wear casual or sport attire, and remember to dress comfortably!
• Always be sure to wear/pack proper clothing for the weather condition or time of day - temperatures can vary drastically throughout the day in the spring and fall. During sunrise, the temperature gradually warms and a windbreaker may be appropriate. For sunset flights, you may want to wear a jacket and pack an extra layer in case. Flights in the summer typically experience more stable temperatures.

Check sunrise and sunset times:

• Ballooning is best in weather conditions just after sunrise and 2 to 3 hours before sunset, when wind speeds are between 4 to 6 mph (ideal).
  • During the day when the sun shines on the ground, surface winds mix with fast, upper winds, and the environment is unpredictable. Thermals (rising columns of warm air due to heated earth) form, making it difficult for pilots to control the balloon and conditions hazardous.
• After sunset, there is reduced visiblity, and flying is not allowed.
