Objective:  Practice what we can learn about KT by “thinking like a movement.”

Assignment:  Guided by the scholarship of Marshall Ganz, create a Public Narrative for the KT initiative you describe in Assignment 1. (15% of final grade). The narrative should be a maximum of 3 pages, and shorter is often better.

*The guidelines for creating a Public Narrative are provided in pages 60-92 in the Ganz et al. "People Organizing" manual.  Note, however, that you are being asked for this assignment to present your narrative in a different order, by starting with the Story of Us.

Group members will all share similar/the same Stories of Us and Now, but each group member will have a different Story of Self.  So the group will submit one word document that includes a single Story of Us, a single Story of Now, and one Story of Self per group member. 

Please submit Assignment 2 as a Word Document by email using the subject heading "SPPH 581N 2022 Assignment 2".

Groups will have an opportunity to present draft versions of the Stories of Us and Now to receive class feedback in advance of final submission.

Students will be evaluated according to their ability to articulate concisely the content required for:

  • A story of Us – who is the shared constituency for the KT activity?
  • A story of Self – what motivates you to contribute to the constituency’s shared purpose?
  • A story of Now – why is it urgent that the constituency act now?
  • Effectively weaving the three elements into a single Public Narrative

This assignment invites students to practice performing the following core MPH competencies recommended by CEPH:

4. Interpret results of data analysis for public health research, policy or practice.

8. Apply awareness of cultural values and practise to the design or implementation of public health policies or programs.

9. Design a population-based policy, program, project or intervention.

12. Discuss multiple dimensions of the policy-making process, including the roles of ethics and evidence.

13. Propose strategies to identify stakeholders and build coalitions and partnership for influencing public health outcomes.

14. Advocate for political, social or economic policies and programs that will improve health in diverse populations.

16. Apply principles of leadership..., which include creating a vision, empowering others, fostering collaboration and guiding decision making .

18. Select communication strategies for different audiences and sectors.

19. Communicate audience-appropriate public health content, both in writing and through oral presentation.

20. Describe the importance of cultural competence in communicating public health content.
