You will be writing about your view of philosophy three times over the course of the term (the third time is for the Philosophy in the World post at the end of the term).
For this first assignment, please write a paragraph about what you think philosophy is, here at the beginning of the term.
Instructions
Answer one or more of the following questions:
- If you had to define philosophy in a sentence or two, how would you do it?
- What is it that philosophers do?
- What makes a text or a question or a topic philosophical?
- What do you think may be different about a philosophy course than some other courses you've taken?
Please write somewhere between 75 and 200 words (approximately; it can be a little less or a little more).
It's okay if you really don't know what philosophy is; just take a guess. Don't go looking online for answers; this assignment is meant to get your first thoughts, before we discuss possible answers to those questions.
Grading
This assignment counts for 1% of the philosophy in the world assignment (the overall assignment will be 10 points, with 8 of those being for the main philosophy in the world assignment due April 8, and 1 of those being for the What is Philosophy part 2 assignment due March 1). The assignment says it doesn't count into the final grade but that's just because the points will be added into the main philosophy in the world assignment to make a total out of 10 there.
It will be marked as:
1 point: completed adequately
0.5 point: completed but doesn't follow instructions fully
0 points: not completed
