- Due May 24, 2019 by 11:59p.m.
- Points 6
- Submitting a text entry box
You have learned that role clarification helps teams work together more effectively and efficiently. This assessment will provide you with a chance to apply the skills you have learned in this course through a writing activity. This assessment has two requirements: the first will be to complete your own writing activities, and the second will be to provide feedback on others’ writing activities. You will not receive a grade for this assignment until you have completed your submission of the peer review.
This activity is graded by your peers. Peer assessments contribute 10% to your overall course mark.
Refer to the course schedule for the two due dates associated with this assessment. The first part of the peer assignment (your own contribution) is due earlier to provide enough time for you and your peers to complete the second part of this assignment.
In this case some real quotes are being used to describe the impact of home birth transfers from each person’s perspective; there is also fictional content used to support the development of this vignette about role clarification.
Complete this activity by identifying these things:
- What is each person’s role and main responsibility for the birth?
- What are the duties for each 3 roles? List 2 duties per role.
- Identify 1 role request and 1 negotiation within the vignette. Copy and paste the sentences and label as a ‘role request’ or ‘negotiation’.
- When you have completed your responses, assess 3 of your peers by using the rubric provided. You will assess the accuracy and quality of the written responses. Such as whether or not their acknowledging was done correctly and the response was of good quality.
** You must assess 3 of your peers in order to receive a grade and an evaluation for your submission **
The Vignette:
Three providers are trying to coordinate care their during an urgent home birth transfer. The team is rushing around trying to prepare for the birth and the doctor turns to the midwife and says:
“I’m happy to do my job and help this woman, but I’m much more comfortable with complications than crisis.” “I would like to take over the role of Most Responsible Provider.”
The midwife is about to reply but gets ushered out of the way by the nurse who begins to asks the doctor what hospital personnel are needed and what his plan is. The midwife approaches them and says:
“I want to be treated as a respected colleague during transports and included in dialogues about the best course of action.” She turns to the doctor and says “If you would like to take over as Most Responsible Provider, then please allow me to give you a history of what occurred at home. Please include me in your care planning since I am her primary care giver and will be providing care after the birth.”
The nurse appears apologetic and says to both “I believe it’s crucial for the team to allow sufficient time for a proper handover and for introductions to be made when a transfer from a home birth is coming into the hospital environment. Then we’re all on the same page.” “I can co-ordinate the team and lead the introductions and handover. If you would like to assume primary care for the mother and baby after the birth, then I can you help with newborn resuscitation if it is needed. The pediatrician is tied up right now and we are short nursing staff.”
The doctor turns to the midwife and says “It’s helpful and most safe when there is clear charting and documentation that accompanies a home birth transfer.” “Can you also document who is most responsible for mother and baby now and note it again after the birth? We would like to avoid any confusion with postpartum nurses.”
