This is a checklist that will make sure you make the most out of your next hike!

Check the weather forecast in advance for the day(s) you plan to hike.

  • It is important to check the weather when planning a trip because it will help with packing, dressing appropriately, and choosing the best and safest day to go hiking. You should ask questions like:
    • Is there an incoming storm?
    • What is the highest and lowest temperature during your hike?
    • What is the risk of an avalanche?
    • How will the weather affect road conditions and transportation to/from the trail destination?

Check sunrise and sunset times.

  • This allows you to plan the type of hike you want to do.
    • Sunrise
    • Sunset
    • Full-day
  • Tells you information on visibility, which helps you decide when you want to start and finish the hike.

Dress Appropriately!

  • It is always better to dress in layers in case temperatures fluctuate throughout the day
  • Wear/bring more layers when the temperature is lower
  • Wear appropriate footwear that is comfortable and has a good grip.
    • Trail shoes
    • Hiking boots provide more ankle support
    • Snowshoes

Pack the Essentials!

  • Packing too much for hiking is common and can make your bag heavier than necessary.
  • Here are some things that should always be with you on your hike:
    • Lots of water to stay hydrated
    • Snacks to keep you energized
    • Extra underwear and socks
    • Flashlight
    • A comfortable backpack or hiking bag
  •  Here are some items that at least one person should have in your group:
    • First aid kit
    • Bear Spray
    • Sunscreen and bug spray
    • Portable charger

Let Someone Know

  • It is important to provide your itinerary to family members or friends who are not going on the hike with you.
  • This should include your estimated time of arrival, time of return, and destination.

Lastly, Grab Some Buddies!

  • It is always safer to hike with more people and the more the merrier! (and less likely you will get attacked by a cougar...)
  • Hiking is the perfect way to bond with others while enjoying the beautiful view and wildlife
