1. Weather Forecast

What does the weather forecast say about the weather in the area you will be hiking in? Is the temperature and environment conducive to hiking? Are there any cold or warm fronts approaching that may impact the environment or make hiking dangerous? If the hiking site is close to you then can you see any signs that a storm is coming on, like cumulonimbus clouds or extremely strong winds?

You can look up most popular trails on the Alltrails app for your phone, this will give you helpful information on current weather, elevation, as well as duration and "required" skill level. On this app you can also read comments from other hikers, which should help you make your go/ no-go decision. Ensure you pick a suitable trail that will not be to challenging for your skill level.

3. Personal safety

After you have reviewed the weather information do you feel you will be able to safely execute this hike? Do you have the appropriate equipment such as warm and water proof clothes for cold snowy trails (to avoid hypothermia) or lightweight durable clothes for warmer trails (to avoid heat exhaustion)? Do you have a bottle that can provide you an adequate amount of water, to avoid dehydration during the trip. Have you familiarized with the area you are hiking through, so that you don't get lost? Do you have back up plan in case you do get los?. Most of all, do you feel comfortable with going on the hike?
