Go/No-Go Checklist

CHECK 1: Am I physically ready and capable? The most important part about going to play beach volleyball is that you are capable to potentially run around hours in the heat. If you have any pre-existing injuries, it may be a better idea to recover first before becoming physically active again. You don't have to be incredibly fit (or fit in general) to play beach volleyball, but make sure that you are prepared and healthy.

       - when you get to the beach, stretch before you play! It is super easy to sprain an ankle or get injured on the beach as the ground is not level.

CHECK 2: Did I take a step outside and feel/see what the weather is like? It can be very helpful to get a preliminary idea of what the weather looks like. For example, the weather app on your phone might say it is 25 degrees Celsius, but it can sometimes feel much cooler or hotter than that. Ask yourself if it's raining, snowing, foggy, sunny, etc. and consider if you can play in these conditions. Going out yourself and deciding whether or not you can play beach volleyball in the given temperature is an important step in your Go/No-Go decision.

CHECK 3: Did I look online for weather information? Even though it is helpful to step outside and take a look, the conditions are the beaches can be vastly different from where you are living. By viewing one or multiple weather websites, you can get a better idea of what it is like at specific beaches or locations that you want to play at. Be sure you check again before you leave your house to double check that there have not been any drastic changes.

CHECK 4: Do I have the proper clothing? Equipment? Another important aspect to consider when making you Go/No-Go decision is whether you have the proper gear for beach volleyball. You don't want to be playing volleyball in a thick sweater if it is 30 degrees Celsius outside (ensure that you are dressed appropriately), and you will definitely want to bring a ball to play you (no ball = can't play). Additionally, water bottles/water is a must bring! Even if there are water fountains at the beach, walking back and forth can be a hassle and having water on hand is always helpful.

CHECK 5: Did I check the weather last time while I'm at the beach? Just to check one last time, take a look at the conditions when you're at the beach and ask yourself if you are capable of playing in them. It may hotter, colder, or windier than you had anticipated, so it is important to make a final decision based what the weather  currently looks like.

It may seem like a hassle to go through this, but beach volleyball can be dangerous and you have to ensure that you are safe before playing. Once you've completed this checklist, go out there and have some fun!
